ALLAN LAVELL: Allan Lavell, British, Ph.D in Economic Geography with specialization in regional and urban development, from the London School of Economics and Political Science. He has been a researcher and teacher at the Middlesex Polytechnic, University College London, El Colegio de Mexico, the Autonomous Metropolitan University of Mexico, the National University of Mexico, the Central American University Confederation, the Universities of Costa Rica and Buenos Aires. Since 1992 he has coordinated the Social Studies Programme on Risk and Disaster at the Latin American Social Science Faculty located in San Jose, Costa Rica. Founding Member of The Latin American Network for the Social Study of Disaster Prevention in 1992, he has worked for the last 23 years on the risk and disaster themes. Author of more than 100 specialized documents, chapters, books and articles on the risk and disaster problem and more recently on the adaptation-risk management links. His latest book is on the changing patterns of risk associated with El NiƱo in the Americas. He has been a consultant for more than 20 international and national agencies, on more than 60 missions in 25 countries, and has given 140 conferences in 38 countries worldwide. Amongst his academic distinctions he has received the Latin American and Caribbean Research Scholarship from the Bank of London and South America for postgraduate studies; he has been Vice President of the Disaster Research Committee of the International Sociological Association, member of the Board of Directors of the Inter-American Planning Society and of the Hazard Committee of the International Geographical Union. At present he is an Associate researcher on disaster risk at the Latin American Social Science Faculty-FLACSO- San Jose, Costa Rica. He is also coordinating lead author for chapter 1 of the current IPCC-ISDR sponsored special study of Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation.
