” “Structural insulated panel (SIP) manufacturer Vantem Panels is trying its hand at prefabricated homes. The company just launched SmartHomze, a Net-Zero home kit for affordable green living. The comfortable homes come in six sizes, including a small studio-style guest house, and assemble into LEED certified living for around $150 per square foot
The Vermont-based company is best know for producing energy efficient urethane panels, but their latest venture sees Vantem assembling their products into prefab homes. With the six available SmartHomze models, the kits can accommodate a wide variety of needs, from a simple free-standing studio apartment to a sprawling three bedroom, two and a half bathroom model which also features a wraparound porch.

Many prefabricated homes cost around $200 to $250 per square foot with construction costs, but SmartHomze ranks in at just $150—not including permits, site work or the foundation—making it one of the more affordable options for green, prefab living. Made from Vantem’s Oriented Strand Board SIP panels, the homes are already on the track for LEED certification, with 72 points alone achieved by the panels. In addition to the panels, the kits include exterior wall materials, windows, doors, flooring, HVAC equipment and metal roofing. The kits also include a photovoltaic array for the roof, as well as a heat-recovery ventilator. Appliances, cabinets and plumbing fixtures aren’t included, leaving the aesthetic—and energy efficiency of those components—up to the home owner.
