She grew up in a small forest in South India “the kind, you know with monkeys,” and now she works on the cutting edge of humanitarian satellite delivery. Once witness as a girl to the devastation of the 2004 tsunami, today she is a Geomatician working to bring faster, more efficient, more informed humanitarian action and disaster risk reduction. With climate change and burgeoning global populations every piece of the planet is at risk from natural or manmade hazards. What we do with this knowledge is what can change disaster back into hazard. Swaminathan takes us through UNOSAT’s cutting edge work mapping floods, earthquakes, fire, drought, war, rebellion, and tsunamis using satellites as the key to this battle against disaster.
Rohini Swaminathan is a Geomatics engineer working with UNOSAT, the Operational Satellite Applications Programme of UNITAR, the United Nations Institute of Training and Research based in Geneva, Switzerland. She also trains local decision-makers in Asia and Africa on systems to reduce disaster-related risks in Bangladesh, and countries in East Africa. Previously she worked with DEVELOP, part of NASA’s Applied Sciences Program in the United States.

Thanks for the Video clip! Apologies for the intrusion, I would appreciate your thoughts. Have you heard the talk about – Proutklarton Crisis Away Plan (google it)? It is a great one of a kind guide for surviving and preparing for a disaster without the hard work. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my buddy finally got excellent results with it.
It's just beyond my expression, and also give me believe in making a safe environment, that we can make it by ourselves

Hats off to your commitment. Yes we need effective early warning systems, we need early action. Information is key to avoid natural hazards into becoming fatal disasters,,
I love you, Rohini! This was so inspiring for me. It is awesome to hear how you transformed from a girl from a forest, living with monkeys to a wonderful cutting edge Geomatician. You moved me and the rest of my classmates. I am only 11, but I feel like I can fly after watching this!
AND i am proud to say that she is my older sister

This girl opens our eyes to look at the importance of Disaster management in order to reduce the risk… All stakeholders need to work in tandem and take quick actions ASAP.
This is great work. Congratulations to you, I am more inspired even as a public health researcher
Inequality? Goodness and you sounded so smart at the beginning. What about corrupted politicians in poor countries? Stand up to them. Prevention is key!
Rohini reminds me of Lila. Such a good speaker!
