Deep in the Amazon Rainforest of Ecuador lies the “Amazon Chernobyl”, a 1,700-square-mile environmental disaster brought on by oil extraction and production. After a visit to Ecuador in 1993, human rights lawyer Steven Donziger and other attorneys brought a class-action lawsuit against Texaco (later Chevron) on behalf of over 30,000 farmers and Indigenous people from this Amazon region who were affected by this disaster. Through his personal testimony and supporting footage, Steven recounts his experience advocating on behalf of the environment and affected communities and the personal toll this work has had on his life.

Why don’t you cover things like you used to that were current. Why don’t you cover the mining hits in the DRC where children are mining for less than a dollar a day for Chinese mining companies that sell 97% of the worlds heavy metals or electric vehicles. The other 3% comes from Australia. I don’t want to hear about things that happened 20+ years ago when we have more abhorrent and terrible things happening now

It should be said that it is not oil unto itself that is the problem, but that it is mankind as always. This is always true any such problem, from oil to chemical and nuclear waste to the death of millions due to war.

When oil is discovered the nation can become wealthy but also incredibly poor,, which is what happened here,, Ecuador's government may have gotten a financial boost but the rest of the country became incredibly poor in all aspects,, the situation is intensified when the company that's drilling the oil is from another country and it's even worse when it's a country that runs on the American based capitalism set up which is only trumped by an American company

I saw the mecheros (methane gas burning torches) and the crude oil in the water during a study abroad trip in 2023. This is the legacy that my country leaves in its wake. US citizens are shielded from the true costs of our empire. Wake up and fight corporations who don't care if you die tomorrow, as long as they make money.
