The report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) – the UN group on the science of climate change – said climate change was already here and causing chaos in some places.
The Prime Minister said the world must shift to clean energy and provide finance to help countries at risk from changing climates.
The UK government, which has adopted a 2035 deadline for a 78% emissions cut, is due to publish its strategy on cutting UK emissions to zero overall by 2050 this autumn.
Net zero means cutting carbon emissions as far as possible then balancing out any remaining releases, for example by tree planting.
But what could net zero mean for our society and economy? Newsnight Economics Editor Ben Chu reports.

Hydrogen isn't very efficient though is it. Why aren't they going for electric heating or heat pump tech? Creating electricity and then making hydrogen that is heavy and needs to be transported (another energy overhead) doesn't seem to make sense. Are they just trying to keep the gas infrastructure alive?

The uk only contributes 0.9 percent of carbon emissions compared with 27 percent for china. Getting everyone to buy heat pumps is not viable for all homes. What about those in blocks of flats. There has been no real discussion of other types of heating such as district heating systems that would be more efficient in heating hundreds of homes than having individual pumps. What about public transport improvements no discussion. Heat pumps become less efficient in colder temperatures and would require gas backups when temperatures drop below freezing. The strategy is lacking in details and costs. Some of the technology has not even been developed yet. It seems a great way to bankrupt an economy on the alter of ideals. Let the largest carbon emissions countries implement changes first. When they get down to o.9 percent then we will be on par.

Redcar was hit hard by the closure of its steelworks, and the loss of 2000 jobs, in 2015. This strategy is giant and brave leap cutting carbon emissions. It is painful for communites and workers because of livelihood. Pipeline, cookware are made of steel or copper. Everybody eats fast food. The plastic is all over the place and recycling is problematic. ’Do somethig drastic, cut a plastic!’
Net zero means for society are new jobs manily and for the economy is a very complex issue. The question is what to do with polluting industry and how to invest in transformation by replacing fossil fuel infrastucture. Without climate madness I think the target is not the „net zero” but we need transformation everywhere bit by bit.

Scrap Net Zero
Never in the field of human history has there been so much talk about a problem or crisis for so little result. Frankly, to achieve net zero with no carbon emissions at all means a return to a Hunter gathering society of thousands of years ago. That of course, will have to mean far less people than there are today. It is time for net zero advocates to acknowledge this fact.
The biggest and in theory easiest thing to reduce carbon into the atmosphere is to stop uncontrolled cutting of rain forests and planting forests. I say in theory because obviously this is far easier said than done, and it certainly not happened yet. And most rain forests lie in poorer countries where people worry about how they will be able to feed themselves the next week, rather than on longer-term problems like the climate. Certainly not all, but most people concerned about the climate live in richer countries where they do not have to worry whether they can feed themselves next week, though the cost of living crisis is changing that, at least for many people.
I doubt whether all this rhetoric about carbon emissions will make any difference at all to those emissions. It has not in the last 4 decades and almost certainly will not in the next 4. I may be wrong, but I doubt it.
