Division within the Morrison government is threatening to derail the Prime Minister’s push to boost Australia’s climate targets.
Senior Nationals have signalled any endorsement of the proposal will be delayed – unless guarantees are made that climate measures will not damage jobs or regional economies.
They’re also concerned a more ambitious medium-term target and a net zero pledge could trigger voter backlash in key states.
A Nationals partyroom meeting will determine whether the Coalition will fracture or unite over the plan on Sunday.
The PM is also facing pressure on the more immediate 2030 emissions target – Australia has agreed to slash emissions by up to 28 per cent by the end of this decade.

Excellent news, Morrison's 'net-zero 2050' needs to be "derailed". To even talk of buying into this fraud by governments around the world is an insult to peoples intelligence. Global emissions continue to increase, and will continue on this trajectory due to massive population growth over the next 30 years, and over half the world's population lifting themselves out of a subsistence existence to a middle class consumer driven one.

Nett zero would be a blow to the economy, but it will be a greater blow to those who are living on fixed incomes such as pensioners, the price hikes that will inevitably follow in the energy sector will leave some of our most vulnerable citizens having to choose whether to eat just one meal a day and freeze or swelter depending on the season, or keep a livable temperature and only eat once every two days.

Why don’t they just follow the Swedish model of burning rubbish and waste? This has aero emissions, provides two services, removal of land fill and toxic emissions that produces (which is a ridiculous way to deal with rubbish) and also powers the regions electrical grid.
