“It’s the substance of any deal that matters. Not only does it look like we’re not going to get any greater ambition in our 2030 target, but it looks like there’s going to be money for a new coal train for the Nationals. The Nationals want new coal fired power stations to be left on the table. So it’s really quite a grim outlook for Australia and what Scott Morrison will be able to take to Glasgow,” said Ebony Bennett, deputy director of the Australia Institute.

Nothing to add
It is desperately sad that Australia could have been ahead of the curve. That opportunity seems to have gone. We now seem to have the option of going with the flow or being dragged along in the wake of more progressive countries….and it is abundantly clear we are going for that last option.
Sadly, where I live in SE Queensland the general view of cutting emissions remains highly negative. Essentially it means cutting employment, increasing power bills, power insecurity and damaging the country’s long term economic outlook. And climate change scepticism is very strong. Essentially this is driving the narrative.

Forward to the age of steam! Coal rules, OK?
Morrison is caught with his rhetoric of the past. Miners need to concentrate on Lithium NOT coal.
Who gives a. what Joe Biden thinks France or England or the UN this isn't about climate it's about at the economics have a look at China's admissions and have a think about it that's if they're even telling the truth about their numbers.
Love that Ebony mentioned that the liberals could side with the Greens and Labor to pass targets and that care about they orderly transition of workers. I've volunteered for both Ellen Sandell and Adam Bandt and its something they never forget to mention about supporting the existing workforce with training and support is vital component of the transition to the clean economy.
