Managing disaster risk as the climate changes: Richard Haigh, University of Huddersfield

In the run-up to COP26, we asked our researchers to tell us about their work and the challenges of tackling climate change.

Professor Richard Haigh works at the Global Resilience Centre at the University of Huddersfield. Richard has been working with government partners and universities in Indonesia completing research into climate change and disaster risk.

His research also involves looking at how and why the current river management arrangements are contributing to flood risk in Jakarta, and how early warning signs for tsunamis can be improved.

Richards says: “Although we’ve been working with Indonesia specifically, many of these challenges are faced by other countries around the world. So regardless of where, the task of managing disaster risks and disaster events like these, is heavily dependent on the development of new scientific knowledge, but also policy development that is evidence based”.
