Menzies Research Centre’s Nick Cater says there are “too many unknowns” to do a meaningful costing on what would happen beyond 2030 regarding a net zero emissions target.
“The biggest unknown is what technology will be available,” he told Sky News host Peta Credlin.
“Governments can’t dictate technology.
“They can make the settings right so that companies will invest in it, and there is a lot of money going into this because there’s a very rich prize at the end of it.
“But this net zero by 2050 can only surely be based on the expectation we will have new technologies after 2030.”
It comes as the Nationals have signed off on the Prime Minister’s plan for net zero by 2050.

Everything depends on technology being developed. Why waste money on deploying inferior technology? Spend the money on R&D! Meanwhile increase nuclear and gas. But, I don’t believe we need do anything cos there is no man made CO2 problem. There may be a warming or cooling and we may need to adapt but we need robust and secure generation and transmission to cope.
I remain unconvinced by climate change. Even if it's true, no one has any rational answers to offer without throwing the baby out with the bathwater. My advice is to pay lip service but prevaricate, prevaricate, prevaricate… It seems that our system is turning out stupid and imprudent people. We must circumvent their pitiful maunderings and whilst being seen 'to do the right thing' we must in practice follow the time honoured Muslim practice of Taqiyya. I just hope we have the necessary skills or the game is up.
