In the lead up to COP26 it’s been nothing but net zero emissions. Yep, the net zero emissions by 2050 target has been in the playbook of many world leaders for a while now and today, Prime Minister Scott Morrison subbed in. In 29 years’ time Australia needs to be balancing the amount of greenhouse gas emissions it’ll put into the atmosphere with the amount it takes out that’s net 0. To get there it’s going to spend more than $20 billion cleaning up the fossil fuel industry with tech like carbon capture and invest in ‘ultra-low cost solar’ power and ‘clean hydrogen’.
Not everybody in the government has been in a rush to commit to net 0. After all, Australia has a lot of fossil fuels and a lot of people work in the industry and the Deputy PM and some of his colleagues were worried it would lead to job losses but after a lot of negotiations, everybody seems to be on board. Australia’s also on track to cut emissions by 30-35% by 2030 which is some good news to take to COP 26 climate summit in Glasgow later this week.
VACCINES FOR KIDS
There’s big some big vaccine news today. Moderna says its vaccines seem to be safe and effective for kids as young as six! It’s been testing out lower doses on 6 to 11-year-olds and it says the results are really promising. Rival company Pfizer has already applied to get its kid-sized vaccines approved in the US which could happen as early as next month!
HER WAY
11-year-old Abbie started a new women’s sports magazine called Her Way! She says it all started when she was flicking through sports magazines – and noticed most of the articles were about men, so she decided to do something about it. And she’s got some high-profile fans! As you might have guessed from the title it’s all about women in sport.
PLASTIC SKATEBOARDS
First up these skateboards which look like – well pretty regular skateboards. Until you realize they’re made from bottle caps! Locals here in Rocinha which is in Rio De Janeiro in Brazil – have been donating them – as part of a project that’s aiming to give new life to rubbish! It takes about 500 caps and two hours of work to make a skateboard – and how cool are the results!
SOCCER BOOTS
Manchester United star Paul Pogba has put his name to this new line of football boots. Yes – they look cool – if you’re into that sort of thing. But the best bit – according to some is what they’re made of – 100% vegan non-animal products and some recycled materials.
DIAMOND GLASSES
And forget your regular, run of the mill glasses, these are DIAMOND! Yep, real diamonds – even the lenses!!! And these ones are emeralds. They once belonged to a Prince in India more than 400 years ago in the ‘Mughal-era’. And he obviously had an expensive taste. Now the ‘Gate of Paradise’ and ‘Halo of Light’ glasses are going up for auction and their new owner can expect to pay around $6.5 million to rock this look!
