Focus groups say the Coalition’s net zero pledge will see the federal government shed votes at the next election with “abandoned” conservatives preferring the minor parties instead.
Nationals Leader Barnaby Joyce announced on Sunday it would give provisional support to an emissions reduction target as Prime Minister Scott Morrison prepares to head to Glasgow for the COP26 Climate Summit.
Redbridge Group director Simon Welsh says United Australia Party and One Nation will benefit from the climate backflip.
“We’re definitely seeing votes shed off the right flank of the Coalition on this issue,” he told Sky News Australia.
“For a long time, have felt abandoned by the political system, if you will whether that’s culturally or economically or both and then an issue like climate change comes along and they see a threat in it, they see a threat to their lives, to their livelihoods and they see a threat to their lifestyle.
“It just reinforces that sense of abandonment and that’s what’s really fuelling this drop off in that LNP right flank.
“The threat (of the minor parties) is real, we’ve seen it in our research for a while … and the climate change issue is a big driver in that vote.”

My vote is leaving the coalition to Australia United Party. I have had a guts full of the Lies told by both Labour and the Coalition for many years. They campaign on something, only to water it down or drop the campaign promise once elected. I also do not like the way they negotiate away what they promised when needing support of the opposite parties to get something through.
Most politicians are not there for the citizens of Australia, only to remain in power at all costs and for their "fat for life" Superannuation schemes paid to them by the Tax payer.
