Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says after months of talk, two weeks of division, a fight to narrowly get it through the Nationals party room, and years of climate wars, Scott Morrison announces a net zero emissions climate change target.
“The Australian Way, he called it, the PM, a policy Labor announced months ago but with a plan behind it,” Mr Clennell said.
“The argument behind “The Australian way” being we meet the targets, the other countries don’t.”
“But a nationally determined contribution of net zero by 2050. The PM arguing just as we got the iPhone and those advances in technology, the same will reduce electricity emissions by 97 per cent, all government has to do is enable it.
“The PM arguing Australians will be $2,000 a year better off because of the target Scott Morrison has set.
“We have revealed he showed polling showing 80 per cent support for net zero until people told it cost them $500 or more a year, after which it dropped.
“The government has put the cost of hitting net zero as $20 billion. Already committed through existing programs.
“Of course, it cost them an extra seat in cabinet for the Nationals as well. Kieran asking how credible is this when Barnaby Joyce, the Deputy PM and leader of the Nationals, not at the announcement, isn’t even on board.
“So politically, what is the PM seeking to do here? He is saying we’ve got a plan, the other mob haven’t got a plan. We won’t tax you, the other lot will.
“Well we’ve known this announcement was coming. I thought one of the most interesting parts of the press conference was the PM basically confirming we are in for an election next May. Just like in 2019, he wants to do a budget first.”

I've got my own net zero plan, it comes in two parts, I won't be going back to work in Australia so I'll be a net zero net taxpayer, and I'll be leaving Australia permanently as soon as I can, the amount of times I'll come back, and the amount of money I could bring back will be total of net zero.

– It's 24/7 dispatch-able power. In the US it has a reliability rating of 92.5% while Solar is at 24.9% & Wind 35%. Day or night, wind or no wind, it works.
– It is in fact extremely safe. It's deaths per KW are actually lower than either Wind or Solar
– There have been answers for waste for a long time. It can be recycled, Re-processed or, imo the best option, used in advanced fast reactors which leave no long lived waste and of course provide reliable electricity or thermal energy as required.
– It'll give the navy trained nuclear operators from the new submarines a place to work once they're done with the navy.
– Over 80% of coal jobs are directly transferable to the Nuclear industry
– It's a very compact in it's land requirements with Small Modular & Micro reactors being even smaller. Nuscale's plant design would be about the size of a single windmill with an exclusion zone that only reaches the fence outside the facility.
Now's the time to invest. France succeeded with nuclear while Germany failed with wind.

Now Scomo has agreed to net zero by 2050 and cannot say what the cost will be in the economy. And the Nats yet again, agreed and followed his lead.
