Today’s Highlights:
1. Sunak: ‘Rewire’ Global Finance for Net Zero
Chancellor Rishi Sunak spoke on Wednesday at COP26 pledging to rewire the entire global financial system for net zero and make the UK the first ever net-zero-aligned financial centre. Outlining Britain’s strategy over the next five years, he committed £100 million to make climate finance more accessible to developing countries. He also said London would support a new capital markets mechanism to issue billions of green bonds.
2. ‘Green King’ London Mayor on Renewables
London Mayor Sadiq Khan today became the chair of a global network that brings together almost 100 mayors from across the world. The group of cities, called C40, aims to halve their emissions within a decade. Following his newly appointed role as the so-called green “king” of city mayors, Khan took questions from journalists from within Glasgow city chambers.
3. Biden Chides China Leader for Missing COP26
U.S. President Joe Biden criticised the leaders of China and Russia for being absent at COP26 despite their countries being top-5 emitters of carbon dioxide. He said it’s a big mistake that Xi Jinping did not attend, and said both Xi and Vladimir Putin failed to show leadership on this important issue. Prime Minister Boris Johnson welcomed China’s engagement, but said its targets for cutting emissions are not specific enough.
4. UK, India Plan to Connect World’s Solar Grids
Boris Johnson and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Glasgow launching a global initiative to connect the world’s solar power grids. Solar energy is relatively cheap and clean, but it is limited by daytime hours and the weather. The Green Grids Initiative aims to connect countries worldwide into one grid so that those with the sun can help those in the shade.
5. IAEA Chief: Nuclear Energy ‘indispensable’
To reach net zero, countries differ in their opinions regarding nuclear energy. While some like Germany are phasing it out, others, such as the UK, consider it an important part of their energy mix. In Glasgow, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency makes the case for nuclear.
6. NATO Chief: We Need a Strong and Green Military
The NATO head said armies need to adopt new green technologies to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Speaking at COP-26, he said this would not need to be a compromise, since the best technologies will also be the most environmentally-friendly ones. The first step to find out which climate action NATO members should take would be to develop a methodology to measure emissions. He hopes such an assessment would be completed by the end of 2022.
