“Cutting methane is the single fastest, most effective opportunity to reduce climate change risks in the near term,” says atmospheric scientist Ilissa Ocko. That’s because, unlike carbon dioxide, methane’s warming power doesn’t come from a gradual buildup over time but is almost entirely from recent emissions. Ocko identifies three main sources of methane pollution which, if addressed, could dramatically slow down the rate of global warming within years — not decades. “This is the methane moment,” Ocko says.

I think it's hilarious that a building block of life is now " pollution" the sooner all humans fn die the better. You can't stop " climate change" you demented egomaniac, maybe if all you " scientists" spent more time on science and less time on erasing historical data and propaganda. And methane? Know what the largest methane release in history was? When our govt. Blew up the Nordstrom pipeline. Go make me a sammich propagandist.
It was a very impressive speech. Our practices are important, but I think solutions to reduce greenhouse gases, which are the sources of the greenhouse effect, are also very important.
I will do my part by stopping eating rice and eat more meat as rice production is worse than cattle.
That's awesome, I really hope that the knowledge is put to use by those who can
No oil wells or coal mines have ever been closed as long as they keep producing and the material is continually sold. Until we reduce the rate of extraction of these natural resources they will be burned. Our corporate run government is not going to impose taxes on these products.
Inequity? are you kidding me? 6 billion people on the planet do not have adequate energy. Some 2 million die every year because of this. Does anyone care? Of course not. This is an elitist way of looking at the world. These people need fossil fuels. But what do we give them? as much solar and wind as they can stand which does nothing to improve their lives. And we keep beating the drum of co2 as if was the real problem. Ask anyone in a developing country what they think of this. And don't hold your breath expecting a talk on this on TED. It has become the TED WOKE hour.
❤🎉❤🎉
U guys just keep talking till the dooms day
Really wanna change
Start doing today.
.Go vegan ( no animal products till possible )
. Cut consumption as much as u can
. Fck your wanting just start doing what need to be done
Makes me sick when a "scientist" just circumvents the facts. We are already at +1.5c. Fact check me. This year we have even peaked at +2.0 during certain months. Next, the 4000 gigatons we have dumped since 1750 would, even if we had the gigaton sequestration tech. needs storage volumes many times the size of earth. We have neither. Net zero is just a lie. Global economies are hard-coded into fossil fuels. CH4 is a HUGE problem: the East Siberian Arctic shelf (an activated tipping point) has by rough estimates 1400 giga tons of its gaseous form CH4 (N.B. Not Clathrates!) trapped under enormous pressure, underneath a thin and melting undersea substrata…a 50 giga ton burp of that === 4000 gigatons of CO2 equivalent; go ahead, fact check me: look up Natalia Schakhova. So, we are in effect buggered. The only solution that some have worked on at MIT is to cool the planet…its in its infancy unfortunately. So, "…save as many as you can." and p l e a s e, stop the BS, especially from a "scientist".
NEGGAwatts
go vegan
Dr. William Happer at Princeton says the co2 level in Earth history has been 5x what it is now. It is good for the plant life.
The projected inundation of coastlines all over the planet over the next decades is likely harmful for 100's of millions of people, however.
Knowing in Dvance can aid those likely effected by loss of coastline land to flooding, offers advance notice for them to begin preparations for moving inland? At least until the coasts are clear again?
What about the methane that is being released from the permafrost?
Co2=pollution? Ok, time to leave the building..
"As Fast As Possible…" 💁 ☢️ Thorium Molten Salts: L.F.T.R.
Going vegan is also a great way to help. Our bodies have coiled intestines, designed for keeping plants inside our bodies for a long time to absorb nutrients. It is not designed for meat, because the meat stays in our bodies for 72 hours, rotting. That is why, going vegetarian is healthier for you and the planet, for the planet because animal farming is harmful..
Its not humanity destroying everything with climate change, its these capitalists among us who refuse to give up their blatantly stupid economic religion.
CUIDADO CON ESTE TIPO DE COMENTARIOS. UNA COSA ES QUE EL METANO CAPTURE CALOR CON MAS FACILIDAD QUE EL CO2. ENTONCES ¿PORQUE ES QUE SU CONCENTRACIÓN EN LA ATMÓSFERA ES MIL VECES MENOR QUE EL CO2?. YO CREO QUE EL OZONO QUE SE PRODUCE EN LAS TORMENTAS PLUVIALES EN TODO EL PLANETA QUEMA LA MAYOR PARTE DEL METANO PRODUCIDO. GRACIAS.
This is an excellent climate talk.
Analysis that proves anthropogenic emissions cannot possibly cause global warming!
It is a stupidity to propagandize this fallacy!
There are two largest contributors of what they call Green House Effect
1.-Water Vapor (clouds)
2.-Dust
These two main Green House elements cannot (by now) be quantified with any degree of certainty due to their variability and massive dimensions. All models “prefer” no to include them or just assign a marginal incidence in order to validate their models on which they to begin with insert the resulting warming increment, this practice is aberrantly stupid in fact, a fraud.
In top of these “perverse deliberated omissions” other very serios factors larger than anthropogenic emissions like: soils respiration (plants and biota like microbes, insects and animals) as well as earth mantel degassing and continental displacements, and oceans biota, all this many times larger when compared with human activity and emissions are either erased or manipulated to serve their propaganda a business worth trillion dollars plus.
Ratios of the C-12 isotope compared to C-13
Plant/animal matter is comprised of carbohydrate molecules with roughly 1 carbon for every 2 hydrogen atoms (Carbon : Hydrogen ratio around 1:2)
Fossil Fuel Sources:
Contain higher ratios of the C-13 isotope from being underground for millions of years
Fossil fuels like coal, oil, natural gas have higher Carbon : Hydrogen ratios, ranging from around 1:1 to 1:1.5
So, while the total carbon emissions were:
400.35 Gt C/year
We can break this down further in order to determine causation, and forcing from CO2 emitters:
Natural Sources (soil, ocean, volcanic):
367.35 Gt C/year (91.02%)
Predominantly C-12 isotope
C:H ratio around 1:2
Vs Fossil Fuel Sources (Coal, Gas and Petroleum):
33 Gt C/year (8.98%)
Higher C-13 isotope
C:H ratio 1:1 to 1:1.5
This isotopic and molecular differentiation allows tracking the relative contribution of natural vs fossil fuel derived carbon sources.
The very high level of natural carbon emissions from sources like soil respiration, volcanic/degassing activity, and ocean processes – totaling over 367 Gt C per year (clouds and dust not accounted for).
The relatively small contribution of fossil fuel emissions at around 33 Gt C per year, is dwarfed by natural sources.
The differentiation of carbon isotopes and molecular compositions, showing the natural sources are overwhelmingly comprised of C-12 and Carbon : Hydrogen ratios typical of natural processes and organic matter.
Essentially, it is physically and thermodynamically impossible for the relatively minute anthropogenic fossil fuel emissions to be the driving force behind global temperature changes and climate fluctuations. The sheer magnitude of natural sun activity, carbon cycles, water vapor and dust processes and emissions utterly dwarf to near 0.0181% all human contributions.
The real scientific logic mathematical evidence points to natural phenomena like sun cycles earth orbital changes, dust, water vapor, soil respiration, ocean dynamics, and geological activity being the principal drivers of temperature and always changing climate on earth, carbon flows and compositions in the atmosphere and oceans. Whilst human emissions definitely play a role, they are a small fraction compared to the Sun, Water Vapor, Dust, Biomass and Earth’s system sources.
Based on the data analyzed, we must conclude that human fossil fuel use and its emissions cannot possibly be the overriding force dictating global climate and temperature trends. Natural processes and emissions cycles operating over centuries and millennia are the vastly predominant factors shaping the climate system.
In summary, anthropogenic emissions as the lead climate change driver is absolutely, thermodynamically, physically, unsupportable based on the radiation, convection, emission, sources, volumes, isotopic compositions, and molecular signatures involved from all and any real scientific perspective.
While this video is informative and simple, which is good, I think it's factually wrong on one key thing. Cutting methane is NOT the fastest way to reduce climate change in the near term, that is obviously doing direct geoengineering like cloud seeding. That's not to say we should do that, or that we shouldn't cut our emissions. I'm just tired of people pretending like geoengineering isn't even an option.
I think the fastest way to slow climate change is to eliminate the problem!!!
Um… you forgot the number one way, all the other way combined, is to go VEGAN!! That will solve climate changes or disasters!! Period.
Congratulations, clear, strong message for critical times. I am concerned that change driven sources are emitting large scale methane in particular, Arctic Permafrost emissions. So, good message, no time to loose, save the permafrost to save the climate.
We can't change the orbits of all of the planets and stars in our universe so we can have no effect on climate change.Mans' greatest CO2 contribution is 8 billion people exhaling 16 megatons CO2 per day. How will we change that?
No increase in tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, droughts, heatwaves, wildfires…… there is no "Climate Crisis"….. we need more CO2! This is not a scientist, this is an agenda paid shill.
Wrong! The fastest way is to realize that there is no danger from Co2.
Alright people….HOLD YOUR FARTS IN!!!
Call it Cosmic Law or God’s Will or even the interplay between them both, but it’s no mere coincidence that we, as a species, face the situation of either cooperating to dampen global warming or else watch the terrible effects of global warming such as war, famine and pestilence cause such strife and competition between groups that our consumption of fossil fuels will be naturally curtailed as our worldwide system breaks down, which is one way to force cooperation — that is IF we are to thrive and not merely survive. The choice is ours.
