As the largest CO2 emitter in defence, the Royal Air Force has committed to achieving net-zero by 2040 – 10 years ahead of the UK Government’s 2050 target.
The RAF consumes close to four million litres of aviation fuel a year and while its aircraft are the focus of the drastic change needed, the RAF’s 36 stations must also undergo transformations.
We’ve visited RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire to see the unique approach the RAF is taking to operate in a more sustainable way.

What a load of you know what
The military has no business meddling with environmentalist policies, they are not the green brigade they are supposed to be the sharp spear that defends a nation, not some woke virtue signaling eco warrior, ridiculous!, this is unacceptable.
Lol bunch of old men in the comments afraid of net zero, no question layabouts who got nothing done with their lives so cling to their oldfashioned outlook.
Stop wasting time and money on these pointless measures, climate change is not an issue it is all just a bunch of alarmism, even if it were and issue it shouldn’t be the priority of the military
Nothing like forcing your personal opinions on the subordinates !
What's the point of the RAF wasting money on this when the Armies challenger tanks kick out plumes and plumes of exhaust smoke as well as inject diesel into the exhaust system to create smoke screens ?
I work in cyber security and it always makes me laugh that military/gov love to connect everything to the internet. Anything that is connected to the internet is a ticking time bomb.
Sadly the geoengineering aircraft still will be using fossil fuels for climate and weather mods.
Am not interested in the slightest in the RAF’s carbon footprint, isn’t it all about defence of our country?
Going over the comments, it appears that there is a consensus that Green is not only a waste of time and money; it is also dangerous for a nation to pursue it. Especially for the military. The cult like adoration of everything green is disturbing . I am reminded of the door to door salesmanship of wearing blinders and not accepting, "No!"
Always like to hear from my European cousins.
Words that I do not often hear:. Honor, honesty and humility.
Praying for all of us during these insane times.
May the blessings and love of our Creator be with us all.™️🇬🇧🇺🇸
I’d rather it defended the country than bothered with the net zero ideology. What a waste of time and money
How to make the forces a laughing stock!
How "green" are depleted uranium armour piercing rounds then?
"We never saw them coming cos the radar was switched off and now the base and personnel have been reduced to one giant smoking carbon footprint"!
The naysayers here seem to forget the Battle of the Atlantic and fuel rationing of the past. An armed forces that requires less energy or fuel is more resilient to attacks on its support chain and able to maintain operational capability for longer periods without resupply.
We dont want netzero we want an efficient air force with combat effectiveness.
how about a pedal propelled aircraft ?
Wind up them elastic bands
Will this help us keep our country safe?
EASY CRIPPLE EVERY PLANE .EVERY MAKER OF PARTS …..
I wonder how agile a battery powered fighter jet will be given its weight. Would pilots want to take that for a dog fight thousand of miles away
Virtue signaling RAF, our potential enemies must be quaking in their boots.
The race to net zero is the race to the bottom.
The stupidity and short-sightedness in this comment section is amazing. Going green is definitely a sensible goal and attainable, maybe not in 3 years as he suggested but with energy efficiency increasing, Alternate fuels and carbon capture then the air force would firstly be saving the planet (which I assure you is good) and secondly wouldn't have to rely on any other nation for fuel and for a much smaller cost! We could make our own fuel with carbon capture for example orr possibly use hydrogen or some bio fuel. Just let the scientists do their job.
This world is getting pathetic. are they going to have Green bombs. Lets drop flowers and plant seeds on the enemy, then follow that up with a serious leaflet campaign telling them how naughty they have been….
Hey guys. Don't foget to hit the thumbs down button
