    SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT:

    Brundtland Report 1987:

    "Sustainable development is development that meets the need of the

    present without compromising the ability of future generations to

    meet their own needs."

    It has environmental ansd social aspects.

    Social aspects: Both intergenerational and intragenerational

    a balanced focus on both these aspects is the hallmark of sustanianble development.

    SUSTAAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND EDUCATION:

    SAMAGRA SHIKSHA SCHEME:

    Continued for the period of 5 years; i.e., from 2021-22 to 2025-26

    Total outlay of rupees 2,94,283.04 crore

    It covers entire gamut from pre school to class XII.

    It is in continuum and in accordance with the SDG 4 (Sustainable Development Goal For Education).

    Many major interventions are proposed.

    SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND CLIMATE CHANGE:

    Niti Ayog Sustainable India Index And Dashboard:

    India improved its rank to 66 for 2020-21 from 60 in 2019-20 and 57 in 2018-19.

    India has 10th largest forest area in the world (24% of India's total geographical region is covered with forest

    accounting to 2% of total global forest area).

    India ranked 3rd in increasinhg its forest area from 2010 to 2020 (more than 3% increase over 10 years)

    Niti Ayog's Sustainable India Index was launched on 2018. The third edition 2020-21 computes goal wise

    score on 16 SDGs for each state and UT and a qualitative assessmnet on the 17th goal.

    115 indicators

    Kerala and chandigarh topped in states and UTs category respectively.

    Aspirants: 0-49

    Performers: 50-64

    Runners: 65-99

    Achievers: 100

    ROLE OF AGRICULTURE:

    According to the report by the International Food Policy Research Institute, agriculture plays a key role in meeting

    half of the 17 SGDs

    Rich countries have lower spillovers due to unsustained consumption habits.

    For example Europian countries, topping SDGs, have negative spillsover.

    On the other hand, Sub Saharan Africa with low SDG ranking has very high spillsover.

    India, with Low SDG Commitments category, has a spillsover of 99.3%
