
The occurrence of radiation-related fatalities makes the Chernobyl disaster a one-of-a-kind event in the history of commercial nuclear power. Its reactor design was also unique, rendering the accident largely irrelevant to the nuclear industry outside the former Eastern Bloc. Nevertheless, the incident had a significant impact on safety culture and industry collaboration, particularly between Eastern and Western countries prior to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. According to former President Gorbachev, the Chernobyl accident played a more crucial role in the Soviet Union’s collapse than his own program of liberal reform, Perestroika.
