But some have worried about the added pressures that increase numbers place on already-stretched public services like schools and hospitals.

This is sometimes forgot in this debate about migration. It's not just illegal migration that is on the increase it is legal migration as well. I don't know whether the immigration rules have changed but when an overseas student attending a University over here on a Student Visa graduates, at one time they HAD to leave the UK. They couldn't stay and apply for jobs. There is a case for saying that UK employers might need students to fill jobs in "specialist" areas where that expertise is urgently required but the problem I have with allowing students to stay after graduation is that not all of them qualify with specialist degrees that we need. Many qualify alongside British students who are then applying for jobs alongside these overseas students. I would make a rule that if an overseas student qualifies with a "general" degree that isn't relevant to anything we need in the UK, once their student visa runs out they should leave. If they then want to work in the UK they should have to apply for that job from overseas. We cannot allow numbers of illegal and legal migrants to increase at the rate of double the size of Coventry every few years. It is totally unsustainable
