World leaders at COP28 approve climate disaster fund to help compensate vulnerable countries

World leaders gathered in Dubai as the 28th United Nations climate forum –COP28 –kicked off on Thursday.
Delegates meeting in Dubai agreed Thursday to proceed with actualizing a fund to help compensate vulnerable countries coping with loss and damage caused by climate change.
After years of negotiations at annual UN climate change meetings, it was during COP27 in Egypt last year that nations extended their support for the need to set up the fund.
And COP28 president Sultan al-Jabar shook up the meeting by bringing the decision to the floor on day one.
Such deals are normally sealed last minute after days of negotiations.
COP28 runs until December 12th.
