We have finally accepted the reality of climate change, now we must get real about the solution. The most surprising truth is that we know the solution to climate change and have known it for a long time. But we are being distracted by sexy strategies like hydrogen energy and carbon offsets that offer little hope of much help for decades. We are diverting billions of dollars from the real alternative energy solutions of wind, solar and electric battery technology. Dr. Joseph Romm has a Ph.D. in physics from MIT and is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania Center for Science, Sustainability, and the Media. In the 90s, Romm helped oversee the U.S. Department of Energy’s work on climate solutions, ultimately serving as Acting Assistant Secretary of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. In 2009, Time named him “Hero of the Environment″ and Rolling Stone included him in their list of 100 “People Who Are Changing America.” An author of ten books, CNN host Van Jones has called Romm “the communicator’s communicator.” This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. This is a must-watch for everyone.Shared for you Joseph
appreciate the practical advice given.
This was so motivational!
The speaker made me think differently about the topic.
This has inspired me to take action.
The content was well-researched and presented.
love how engaging the speaker was.
Such a fresh perspective on a common issue.
The talk was both informative and entertaining.
If his brother rebuilt his house he'd still be enjoying his house today.
What percent of the atmosphere is comprised of CO2? It's .004%. How much CO2 can the atmosphere tolerate?
What if what he's saying is BS, just like the nutrition, COVID and Russiagate BS the government pushed on is.
Wow, the way your uncle could explain complex concepts so clearly is really cool and it's obvious how much that has inspired you in your own career path. So lovely to hear about those kinds of familial influences.

I definitely appreciate the urgency in his message to reduce emissions asap but I don't think the general public is ready to make the changes required.
Surely there's some advantage to offsets though? Like it might not be the ultimate solution but it has to help at least a little
CCS technologies are fully researched, developed and available allbeit viewed as not "profitable".
The CC "crisis" can be solved by turning your TV off! Click!
Yeah I don't mean to yuck his yum but I'm going to have to bring up the fact that causation doesn't equal correlation on this one. Like… kids at schools with better ventilation are probably performing better than those who don't because they would have access to all kinds of better resources, not just better heating systems.
It's a very good idea to keep to currently existing technologies…
The problem is that, keeping it real, rules out batteries… And without batteries there's no intermittent renewables, like wind or solar…
So this nice gentleman has no solution, much less a simple one, to "solve" climate change…
climate change IS SOLVED but you won't like it: everyone globally tries solar. not the expensive rooftop install type but small diy solar systems that are cheap, easy to learn and on the ground. ~$500 gets you 300+ watts of power that no longer comes from the oily wall outlet. if we just stop waiting for handouts or those in power to solve climate change for us, together we can cut 10-20% of global emissions in little to no time. and if a broke moron like me can do it, anyone can do it. help us save us, tinker with solar today. love ya
This video contains the UN Climate Change disclaimer. Global warming was officially stated at 1.1°C in 1991 and 1.06°C in 2022. There is no mechanism that would allow greenhouse gas behavior to cause global warming. The back of the United Nation's IPCC science report states it took its greenhouse gas samples at 20,000 meters altitude where it is common high school level knowledge there is no greenhouse radiant energy. This is typical practice for deceptive marketing to state legal data transparency protecting the perpetrators from fraud prosecution.
Earth's greenhouse effect is frequently used as a primary example to high school students of a system always in saturation from the strong greenhouse gas water vapor absorbing all the greenhouse radiant energy from the earth with greenhouse gases within 20 meters of the surface that is all around us everyday and can't have its overall effect changed. There is no further greenhouse radiant energy to interact with greenhouse gases. At 1% average tropospheric water vapor over 99% of earth’s greenhouse effect is from water vapor. Water vapor would hold earth's greenhouse effect in saturation if it were the only greenhouse gas in the atmosphere.
Arctic warming is taking place with the proving mechanism being warm Atlantic Ocean waters migrating deeper and more frequently into the Arctic Ocean warming it and the region. That warmer water is causing a few weeks less of reflective snow and ice coverage resulting in more solar heat gain to the Arctic region surface.
Atmospheric CO2 levels of 1200 ppm about three times what they are today would greatly invigorate C3 plants the majority of plant life on earth greatly greening the planet.
0.4% of the atmosphere is CO2 and on average 1% is H20 water vapor. (1% H20)/(0.4% CO2) = 25. Water vapor is 25 times more present in the atmosphere on average than CO2. Water vapor has an CO2e of 18, 18 X 25 = 450 CO2e total for water vapor to 1 CO2e for CO2.
The Earth’s oceans have 3-1/2 million sea floor volcanic vents warming the water and changing it’s chemistry that have not been systematically accounted for.
I'd just ask my brother how risk aversive he is. Highly aversive, I'd tell him to build some were that won't flood. No real aversion, I'd tell him to rebuild where he is.
His story about Hurricane Katrina and how it impacted his brothers home is a good reminder of how climate change IS affecting people in real time. Sick of hearing people trying to deny it.
All of these are good ideas and would help the people out massively – especially those students. I hope to see some of these solutions implemented.
It’s refreshing to hear a talk that isn’t about politics but focuses on practical solutions. However, the reality is that political support is essential for large-scale systemic changes.
Surprised to hear heat pumps are outselling gas boilers now. Maybe the green transition is happening faster than I thought.
The idea of using heat pumps in schools is really good but I doubt it's feasible for underfunded schools. They're already struggling so much for the things that ARE necessary let alone something extra like that
the breakdown of why carbon offsets aren't effective was enlightening. Never thought about it that way before.
CO2 is plant food.
I love the fact that he didn't just fear-monger but offered concrete solutions. Makes the problem feel more manageable.
The focus on proven solutions over "sxc" new tech makes a lot of sense. Why gamble when we have tools that work?
Heat pumps in schools? Huh, never thought about that before. Obviously that's a game-changer for air quality but I wonder just how much of an impact it'd make on students and their performance
Never even mentioned nuclear, which is our only real hope.
Sad.
5:07 we need to stop calling Fossil Gas "Natural"
Spot on, Joe. Beautifully said with such clarity. We all must STOP THE DAWDLE! and ACCELERATE THE REDUCTIONS!
Electric cars and wind and solar are your solution? Your education is a joke. You obviously have not taken any interest in what impact material mining and technology recycling or lack there of may contribute to the overall global warming and pollution.
Great talk but nothing new. We know the general answer however the question, as always, is how do we get people, companies and countries to change. People in general do not want to change the way they live (or can’t afford to change). They want children, transport, holidays and stuff. Companies want to continue to make profits and their effect on the climate is lower down the list. Countries want economic growth to improve life for their people (and get the votes). Sorry but although some people are trying the freedom that most of us have will eventually be our downfall and before many of our children reach adulthood.
