The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an above-normal monsoon with 106% of the long-period average rainfall. While this may seem beneficial, excess rains come with their own set of problems.
Climate change is making extreme rainfall events more frequent and intense in India. This increases the chances of devastating floods, especially in vulnerable regions.
Uneven rainfall distribution is a concern, with some areas likely to receive too much rain while others remain dry. This can harm agriculture.
The monsoon’s onset may be adversely impacted by the lingering effects of El Niño in the early part of the season. However, La Niña conditions could develop in the second half, making the monsoon stronger.
Urban flooding could be a major issue in cities lacking adequate drainage infrastructure to handle heavy downpours. This can disrupt life and damage property.
Landslides and flash floods pose serious risks in hilly and mountainous areas, which have become more prone to such disasters.
The video examines these factors in detail, emphasizing the need for better preparedness and climate change adaptation to mitigate the monsoon’s adverse impacts on lives, agriculture and the economy. Effective water management will be crucial.
