  1. I'm not opposed to a permanent Mars outpost, but I think some proponents may not realize that 99.99%+ of us will have to stay right here. I think if the outpost is to become permanent , it will likely be as a base for mining 16 Psyche or other metal asteroids, a good thing since it means much mining on Earth can be dispensed with. Otherwise what's the basis for the economy?

  2. Great presentation. The only problem now is that our current warming is at a magnitude unprecedented in geological time and 100% caused by us. The other problem we have is that nearly half the world's human population have far smaller brains than the dinosaurs, who I'm sure would never have contemplated voting for the Donald.

  3. Your videos are always very enlightening for me (and I'm sure many others) and help my understanding a LOT, not a little. As always a BIG thank you!

  4. We get a large temperature maximum every 25k years–called a glacial maximum. Is that a mass extinction? The sea level was rising 3X as fast as now about 5000 years ago.

  5. If you want to tackle the climate crisis, you have to stop consuming unnecessarily. Buy/create only what is really necessary. All these ideas are nice, but the problem is people themselves and people have to change.

  6. Propaganda. Anthro CO2 is only 6% of the carbon cycle. The vast majority of warming is urban development and has a high concentration of thermometers feeding into GHCN. Add to that the data manipulation. Go back 8000 years into the proxy record and warming was just as fast as it is today. Yes earth is warming. No CO2 isn’t the cause.

  7. Thank you for this. It really helps when trying to explain to a few of my colleagues who still even now don't believe we are causing global warming!
This biggest misconception they try to use is "High carbon dioxide levels don't always correlate to high temperatures in the geological past and vice versa!" I was wondering if you had a video that explains the reasons for those particular disparities that I can add to my armour.
Note: I am aware of the different mechanisms that affect climate (including us) but I'm not a geologist specialist so I don't know the individual mechanism for those particular incidences.

  8. Notes:
    ~7:35, the CO2 graph scale starts at 160ppm, rather than zero;
~10:30, CO2 plant cycle also confuses the upper atmosphere CO2 (which determines earth's radiant temperature in CO2 wavebands) with the low altitude plant CO2 cycle – a common climate denier mistake/misunderstanding.

  9. Whe can not stop global warming. What we can do is try to slow the rate of change to a degree to allow us to adapt to some degree and mitigate the inevitable loss.

  10. The Earth's magnetic field reflects about 30% of solar radiation. And it's changing. Over the past 200 years, it has weakened by an average of 10%. Which has led to an increase in solar radiation reaching the Earth by 2-3%. According to my very rough calculations, this is 5*10šâĩ W. Which is about 1000 times more than the power of all human power plants. Do you think this could affect climate change on Earth? (Please don't quibble about the accuracy of the numbers).

  11. I often hear, including in your video, that the climate change we are seeing now is too fast and unprecedented. 1.2 degrees Celsius in 260 years. Hmm… Now thousands of weather stations around the world record temperatures with the highest accuracy. OK. And how accurate is the paleo data? Would they have been able to record such a change as now, thousands and millions of years ago? I repeat – 1.2 degrees in 260 years.

  12. Conparing the rates of temperature change to how fast/slow animals evolved is a fantastic way to communicate the urgency! I've never heard it put that way, great comparison 😊

  13. Are you really comparing a sudden globally devastating asteroid impact to slow change over centuries? The most dire scientific predictions won't lead to human extinction either (though life would become much more challenging and miserable, if they come to pass).

I'm all for arresting the change, if possible. I'm not for pssing in the wind at great expense to most people, who are already struggling to make ends meet.

  14. When the models predict something that actually occurs let me know. So far in 60 years that hasn't happened. If we were following the scientific method we would be looking at other models and reasons. As with all things science has its own politics.

I have issues with the validity ot the concepts you are putting forward. In 2010 the temperature data was altered to coincide with with the assumptions that were being made, by climate scientists one side of the debat.
My favorite discussion around this, I have seen. Was someone loosing a debate said i see ypur using the old data. The data set that was complete was the old data the new data was the altered post 2010 data that supported his argument was the one he wantedto use.

There's a great deal of money, power, and control to be gained by the governments of our bassed on your position in this debate
world so forgive my skeptical views.

You have an opinion about the systems, other scientists have other opinions about the systems.
Many of your misconceptions I have read in accredited scientific papers.
While they are often runaway with and taken to points of stupidity the same can be said for your side of this.

I have also read a recent global detailed study that shows not only are we in an ice age but that we have actually started measuring temperature at the coldest point in 10 thousand years.

Science is a debate. There many things that we do not understand about our planet.
    We find new things everyday.

I am a tech kind of guy and while I think there are better ways to do things many of the solutions we have come up with have there own severe repercussions.

Wind energy is one such solution that has altered the migration patterns and timing of birds. To the un recyclable blades that are now needing to be replaced. Or the government mandated light bulbs that had chemistry that we may never clean up.

I enjoy the debate the problem is that many do not understand it is a debate this has become part of their identity and that is a form a brainwashing something the media and the governments of the world are adept at.
Again I am a skeptic by nature.

  15. Thanks so much for this video. I've always said earth can shake off mankind like a bunch of fleas at any time. We've have only impacted the planet for less than 200 years which isn't even a snapshot of time geologically speaking. Even the ancient bristlecone pines show multi-decade droughts. If that were to happen today it would put an end to at least the western USA

  16. thank you you taught me again ! and I love to learn new things. I wanted to say that this global warming stuff is just a bunch of bunk…but obviously it's not. more shocking to me is you did address my usual refrain on the subject that the planet has gone through many rises and falls of temperature in the past…. (we'll be fine!) but that idea doesn't fly either because of the mass extensions of the life forms at the time. we just happen to be a life form THIS time……. that does not sound very reassuring at all ! however we humans are very adaptable….and we have technology that the life forms before us did not have. air conditioning for one may well save our race in the future. I think perhaps we should start making large Zoos under domes to save the rest of the critters out there….if we start making them now perhaps we can save the critters most threatened by the increase in temperatures…..if we don't act now the temp change may well happen so fast most of the wildlife will die before they can be saved and that would be a tragic thing !

  17. You will never convince the majority of British people that warming is bad because the place is so cold and wet most of the time that the prospect of warming is thought of as a very good idea. We have to fly south just so we can find some good warm weather, it cant warm quickly enough.

  18. I understand your final point, where you explain that the statement "save the Earth" can be dangerous because it can be misunderstood by people, letting them believe that the Earth is gonna end, which is not the case. But I think that statement could also be useful in other cases: I saw a lot of people saying that the Earth is fine as you said, but they also say that humans are the only species who's going toward extinction. I saw them saying "after we are gone, the planet will continue as if nothing happened, as if we never extisted". They completely ignore the problem of the mass extinction, they don't know that the whole biosphere is threatened, not only humans, so they don't know how fundamental is biodiversity preservation. They separate the human kind from the rest of the nature, which is absurd. Want an example? The famous George Carlin's speech, where he says "The Earth is fine, the people are fucked", he also claims that we should NOT try to save other species from extinction, because "it is natural". This is another type of misconception, and a very dangerous one.

So maybe there is no straight answer to whether is right or wrong to claim "save the Earth", because of the fact that the situation is really complex and cannot be well explained in such a short statement. It is dangerous in some cases and useful in others.

  19. Wow really cool like I’m surprised the powerful in a giga trillion dollar world economy expect the serfs to lead. Like wow I’m going to own nothing and live in a box so Kamala has the tools to save the planet!

let’s recycle I mean dump our rubbish in China guys!

  20. I certainly always used to ask why didn't the PETM cause a global mass extinction if it was rapid global warming at a magnitude on par with the Big 5 … but not anymore!

  21. climate change is real because winter and summer exist. Humans can't change the climate because we are too smol. hope this comment helped people. Bless you all 😊😊

  22. There is an air of cognitive dissonance in this presentation. The presentation is technically accurate, however the goal of "no planet b" is to keep earth habitable for current species of life as "we" humans know it. The reality is that change over 200 years is too rapid due to carbon forcing from human carbon emissions, i.e. burning of fossil fuels. The planet will continue to exist. This does not provide comfort to the human species. Large mammals, including humans will be extinct in the near term most probably. This is the shocking and sobering reality. The take away from this video is not whether the planet will remain similar to Venus. The take away is that humans will not survive at this point of rapid change regardless of what the human collective attempts to do.

  23. We have to question can can carbon sequestering lead to even more negative unforseen events? An analogy would be seafarers bring rats and mice to Hawaii and them becoming a problem. The solution was to release mongooses/mongeese 😂 to take care of the mouse problem and that created a plethora of even more problems.

  24. Sigh, you still don't GET IT. The 2,400 GIGATONS of c02 man has released is STILL in our atmosphere and STILL absorbing ENERGY from our Sun and will CONTINUE to do so AS LONG AS IT REMAINS IN THE ATMOSPHERE. It must be REMOVED or the planet will continue to WARM.

Everything else is blah blah blah even from "GEO GIRL" who obviously is smart and cares and avoids the fundamental issue and that we must FIX IT.
