Climate Emergency Forum discusses the content of the recent UN Secretary General António Guterres’ speech given at the American Museum of Natural History where the need for urgent action is reiterated, saying “we are flirting with climate disaster.”
This video was recorded on June 12th, 2024, and published on June 23rd, 2024, and represents the opinions of the discussion participants.
The severe and disproportionate impacts of climate change on the world’s most vulnerable populations, is highlighted emphasizing that those least responsible for the crisis are the hardest hit. It underscores the plight of the poorest people, particularly in regions like Latin America, Southeast Asia, and India, as well as indigenous communities, women, and girls.
The discussion also points out the staggering inequality in carbon emissions, noting that the richest 1% of humanity emits as much carbon dioxide as the poorest two-thirds. This disparity highlights the urgent need for climate justice, where those who contribute most to the problem should bear the greatest responsibility for addressing it. The dialogue calls for immediate and significant reductions in fossil fuel subsidies and emissions to prevent catastrophic global warming, emphasizing that the current trajectory is unsustainable and dangerous.
Furthermore, the dialogue touches on the broader implications of climate change, including its impact on global health, food security, and the ability to maintain peace and security. The increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events are causing widespread displacement and destruction, making it difficult for communities to recover. The dialogue stresses the importance of collective action and the need for systemic changes to the global economy to address these challenges effectively.
Finally, the dialogue reflects on the role of youth and grassroots movements in driving climate action. It acknowledges the critical contributions of young people and marginalized communities in advocating for climate justice and calls for their inclusion in decision-making processes. The dialogue concludes with a call to action, urging viewers to support climate initiatives and engage in efforts to create a more equitable and sustainable future.

If you believe in Christ then you wouldn't be surprised at what is happening
its kind of shame that Trump and Biden and all the presidents and congresses before them have been quietly backing and subsidizing GHG emissions including fossil fuel production, see IMF webpages. Also, tax credits are listed somewhere also.
Im voting for Cornel West who would stop this polluter subsidy.
The point is instead of doing anything to encourage or require GHG reductions, governments are quietly deliberately doing the opposite – with our tax dollars Congress [and other , are supporting GHG emissions production by big industries all over the World.
I’d be surprised if human civilisation has 10 years left, I’d wager we’ll be functionally extinct within 20 years…the coming years are gonna be one hell of a ride
We can no longer be a part of any solution. Too many tipping points are in the past.
We need to adapt to living in what Humanity has wrought, at least a few of us that survive.

Does anyone here use Ecosia browser on their phone?
Set up as a trust to support tree planting.
They claim over 200 million trees planted with their organisation's financial assistance.
This has benefited small scale farmers, wildlife and even helped to bring back river beds where trees modulate the water flow.
They also help to grow crops which support local economies.
Another way we can help is buying local, sustaining local farmers , and reducing transport, which is giving money to the fuel industries.
Using public transport. Less reliance on vehicles.
Reducing flights, and avoiding buying goods which are carried long distance.
Do we really need all those electric gadgets?
Probably many of us already doing these things.
If anyone has any other ideas, please let me know
Oil companies will only give up when they have a replacement product , which will generate billions, and we are not ready to switch over, because nothing is in place, tell me a single community that does not use oil in 1 form or another , even food is produced by oil. to say we are in a bad place is an understatement, i feel like you guys are commentateing on the end of all things, you have really tried to wake the world up , and that is respected

those in power and most responsible for climate change in the usa won't do the critical work plus they are the law so justice will never come for them. decades of peaceful protest and talking til we're blue in the face has not worked. it would behoove us to get some cheap solar equipment and DIY our own energy. it's not hard, a teen could do it. best decision of my life.
24;30 '…you are making that choice every time…' I get into the car instead of taking the bicycle; I buy meat ; build with steel and cement or run the drier without solar. the best protest is to ride your bike to the station/shops.
In just a few years, and no matter the President of the United States, in flashing lights, broke and out if food.
Thanks
…..and its gonna get hotter and hotter and hotter. Greed, cruelty and ignorance is gonna end us all. The only chance we got from suffering is to keep our children from having kids. That's all the hope there is. Climate scientist know this. Im a man of science and logic and I know this to be true. Good luck to all those who believe in God or have hope in humanity. Your all in for such a disappointment if you are relying on our governments to do anything to stop this. Its already too late. Just like all those people who lost there homes due to flooding and tornadoes; don't even bother rebuilding. Its gonna happen again and again and again….
Don't forget the Bats that are falling dead to the floor from the heat.
im with you too Regina, I don't let my kids watch stupid nonsense on the internet.
Well, the conservatives on the US Supreme Court basically just destroyed actual scientific environmental protection 🤷
Most evenings I sit out for a while and look at my garden, of late what strikes me is the deathly silence, no insects, no birds, it fills me with such dread
The 1.5 degC focus is an illusion that uses the early 1850-1900 baseline, rather than the 1991-2020 baseline that far more accurately demonstrates what's happening NOW, at the end of the Hockey stick curve, where, according to C3S, we recorded a 0.75 degC increase worldwide on a average in the first 3.5 yrs. of this decade, which averages to 0.214 degC per year. At the current rate of increase, we can see 2 degC by 2027, dear Peter, and another 1 degC increase every 5 yrs. thereafter. I'm a retired psychiatrist and independent scholar. Hopium is a waste of time.
Is the 'carbon cycle' between the atmosphere and the ground (related to the Arctic ice cores hydro-carbon dating findings) a poignant subject to bring up? Is it not until more people are aware of and the officials acknowledge the significance of the carbon cycle equilibrium during the Agrarian era. (a civ. also did not use of fossil fuels) the climate will not get better is the ' bottom line' as the expression goes?
What can be said? I'm 88 years old, I've done my time…… but my daughter and her son will experience whatever is to come. Yet no one talks about what is to come, they only talk as if it will be more of the same…….. Where are the voices of reason and caring? Where are the voices of the elite, of those with the power and the means?
Don't make any waves is the response I'm getting from friends and relatives. Don't even think of the future……. consider it science fiction, imagination…… talk as if nothing is changing.
Yes, it's painful, very painful.
