The ex-home secretary Tory leadership hopefuls to reaffirm their commitment to ‘leading the world in clean energy and climate action
Conservative leadership candidates must not abandon the green agenda as they push to win over the party’s right, Tory grandee Amber Rudd has warned. In an apparent rebuke to some of the four MPs standing to become Leader of the Opposition, the former Home Secretary urged them to reaffirm their commitment to “leading the world in clean energy and climate action”. Frontrunners Robert Jenrick and Kemi Badenoch have both cast doubt on the policy of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. They have argued that the push for net zero risks damaging the UK’s economy without making a significant dent in global warming, given that emissions in many poorer countries continue to grow. But Ms Rudd told i that Britain could continue to lead the way in going green and setting a positive example to others, and that green policies reflect “proper Conservative values”. She pointed to the closure on Sunday of the country’s last coal-fired power station – a promise she made when she was Energy Secretary in 2015 – as evidence that the Conservatives were the natural supporters of net zero.

The big issue is Cameron destroyed the green industry when the UK was the world leaders. The result of all this all the R&D, copyrights and patents were all sold off to mainly European companies. So for the UK eg GB energy to start production of their own wind turbines they need to spend a lot on R&D of their own and also agree to buy licence agreement which could be very expensive and problematic seeing the UK “government” would be buying from a competitor
