  2. The easing of tensions between India and China along the flash points in Ladakh creates an opportunity for restoring normalcy in the relationship. Evaluate. (250 words, 15 marks)

In the past three years, multiple clashes have occurred at key strategic points along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) between India and China, including areas such as Daulat-Beg Oldie, Galwan Valley, Pangong Tso, and Demchok. These clashes have stemmed from various factors: China's strategic desire to integrate Tibet, Aksai Chin, and Xinjiang into a continuous landscape, as well as India's increasing closeness to the United States, which China perceives as a threat.

Recent fruitful discussions on patrolling arrangements have led to de-escalation at these flash points, creating an opportunity to restore normalcy in the bilateral relationship. Reviving old agreements signed during the 1990s could be a step forward.

    Key agreements include:

    – 1993 Peace and Tranquility Agreement: This established the basis for maintaining peace along the LAC.

    – 1996 Confidence Building Measures: These measures aimed to build mutual trust between the two militaries.

    – 2013 Border Defense Cooperation Agreement: This agreement promoted communication and cooperation to prevent military confrontations.

Strengthening standard protocols and the Special Representative (SR) mechanism, which facilitates high-level dialogue, would be crucial in containing potential clashes and fostering stability.

In the meantime, reduced tensions could pave the way for India and China to focus on building strong economic ties, leveraging platforms like BRICS and SAARC. This collaboration would help ensure regional stability and economic growth, allowing both nations to thrive as leaders in South Asia, rather than being bogged down by evolving conflicts that push the region backward.
