I think that the smart meters will be used so that people will make choices as to when they use their heating. For people on low incomes fuel poverty is a real thing. For old people it can be deadly. My daughter who works in the health service said to me that when people die of hyperthermia that their death certificates, under cause of death will be stated as self neglect. Nevermind that they simply could not afford to heat their houses. Smart meters make this even worse because in that way the government can say that it's the customers choice. How many times have you seen the benefits of smart meters being that they give the customer control. Currently when the wind doesn't blow and the sun does not shine the energy companies have a duty to replace that lost production with fast start gas turbine generators but what you are saying is that they will no longer be under that duty. Therefore the only other way to smooth the power supply will be at the consumer end of the equation. They will in the end be able to increase the price of electricity until enough people turn their appliances off and equalise supply to consumption. I'm certain that this is their intention.
