In 2022, a devastating disaster struck Antarctica’s emperor penguins: around 10,000 penguin chicks in Western Antarctica perished due to increased rainfall brought on by rising temperatures. Unlike adult penguins, young chicks have only down feathers, which are not waterproof. When exposed to frequent rain instead of snow, these chicks struggle to stay warm, often falling ill from hypothermia and ultimately unable to survive.
This mass breeding failure is a grim warning of what lies ahead. Scientists caution that if ice continues to melt at the current rate, up to 99% of the emperor penguin population could disappear by the end of the century. This crisis isn’t just a threat to penguins; it’s a warning sign for all of us.
