This is a weird case of when climate change solved the india Bangladesh border dispute.
Back in 1970 in the aftermath of bhola cyclone, a small island popped up in the Bay of Bengal, off the coast of the Ganga bhramaputra delta. India called it “New Moore Island,” while Bangladesh named it “South Talpatti.” Both nations claimed it because of speculation about oil and natural gas reserves.
The argument came down to the Hariabhanga River. According to the Thalweg Doctrine, when a river separates two nations, the border follows the deepest channel. But the problem was the river’s course kept shifting due to flooding and erosion, making it unclear who the island belonged to. India claimed the main channel was to the east, putting the island on their side. Bangladesh disagreed and wanted a joint survey, but India rejected and sent Indian Border Security Force to install concrete pillars and built a billboard representing the Indian flag and map on the island, which heightened tensions.
But this is when climate change steped in and slowly eroded the island. By 2010, it had completely vanished beneath the rising sea levels. What two countries couldn’t achieve through negotiations, was solved by climate change. A UN tribunal finally settled the broader boundary dispute in 2014, but by then, the island was long gone.
