India’s first hydrogen-powered train is scheduled to begin trial runs in December 2024. The train will be part of the “Hydrogen for Heritage” initiative, which aims to introduce 35 hydrogen-powered trains on heritage and hill routes. The project is expected to cost over Rs 80 crore per train and Rs 70 crore per route for infrastructure development.
The hydrogen train project is a major step towards India’s goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions. Hydrogen is considered a green fuel for sustainable transportation. The project will also make India the fifth country in the world to operate hydrogen-powered trains, following Germany, France, Sweden, and China.
