The number of migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats in 2024 has already exceeded last year’s total, with 29,578 arrivals compared to 29,437 in 2023.
On Friday 25th October, 424 migrants made the crossing, contributing to this year’s record-breaking numbers.
While the total in 2023 reflected a 36% drop from the peak of 45,774 crossings in 2022, the trend has surged again in 2024, with October seeing the highest monthly figures—4,334 migrants and 77 boats.
In response, the Home Office has pledged to combat people-smuggling operations, establishing a new border security command to strengthen international partnerships and pursue traffickers.
