Biodiversity is essential for ecosystem resilience and human well-being; yet it is increasingly threatened by the climate crisis and different types of conflicts. While disputes over natural resources sometimes leads to conflict, exacerbating environmental degradation and undermining social stability, they also offer a great opportunity for cooperation and sustainability.
This side event will explore how climate action and biodiversity conservation strategies can contribute to building pathways for cooperation and climate-resilient peace and support the prevention, mitigation, resolution, and recovery from conflicts. The session will engage speakers and the audience in a discussion around the role of environmental management, climate action strategies and biodiversity conservation for sustainable peace peacebuilding and will showcase innovative approaches for integrating conflict-sensitive and peace-responsive natural resource management with biodiversity conservation strategies and climate adaptation and mitigation efforts. Finally, it will share knowledge, best practices, and successful case studies on collaborative resource management to foster peace and sustainable development while protecting biodiversity.
By addressing the intersection of environmental sustainability and peacebuilding, this side event seeks to contribute to the global dialogue on how to bridge the fields of biodiversity, climate action, natural resource management, conflict and peace to illustrate the different pathways through which natural resource management can pave the way for a more biodiverse, climate-resilient and peaceful world.
