The United Kingdom became first G7 country to end coal-fired power production when it chose to close down its Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station in Nottinghamshire.
Notably, UK was also the first country where world’s first coal-fired power plant was opened.
Once relied on coal for 97% of its electricity. By 2015, coal’s share had fallen to 30%, and the UK committed to closing all coal plants within a decade, marking a major shift towards clean energy.
Can India do the same?
Currently, India is the world’s second-largest consumer of coal after China, and coal contributes to around 70% of India’s electricity generation and abrupt shifting would impact jobs and the economy.
India is aiming for Net Zero by 2070, investing in green initiatives like the National Green Hydrogen Mission, PM-KUSUM and PM Surya Ghar that can help India in building sustainable energy infrastructure and phase out the coal eventually.
