These books are all about climate science and global warming…and they’ve ALL been banned by a school district or library system somewhere in the country.

Preventing kids from reading books about climate change won’t stop it from happening. Let’s empower our kids to understand and do something about our climate instead! So here’s a collection of banned climate change books to make sure your kids get their hands on.

1️⃣ WE ARE WATER PROTECTORS, Carole Lindstrom—This story of an Ojibwe girl working to protect the water supply of her people was banned, characterized as “divisive,” “racist,” and “socialist.”

2️⃣ MARVELOUS CORNELIUS: HURRICANE KATRINA AND THE SPIRIT OF NEW ORLEANS, Phil Bildner—Deemed inappropriate for kids because some passages were hard to read without feeling sad.

3️⃣ WHO WAS RACHEL CARSON?, Sarah Fabiny—Banned from classrooms in PA in 2021, potentially because Carson wrote a controversial book in 1962 about environmental harms.

4️⃣ YASMIN THE RECYCLER, Saadia Faruqi—This book and the rest of the Yasmin series was also banned from PA classrooms by the administration, no reason given. 🤷🏽‍♀️

5️⃣ THE LEGEND OF THE BLUEBONNET: AN OLD TALE OF TEXAS, Tomie dePaola—Part of a whole collection that “features characters representing a variety of ethnicities, religious affiliations, and gender identities,” removed from classrooms in Duval Co, FL.

6️⃣ FOR EVERY CHILD, A BETTER WORLD, Jim Henson—Challenged in Wisconsin for containing “negative, dark, depressing imagery.”
