1. Cotopaxi, Ecuador
Located in the Cordillera Central of central Ecuador, Cotopaxi is one of the highest active volcanoes in the world, standing nearly 6,000 meters tall. It is also one of Ecuador’s most active volcanoes, with over 50 eruptions recorded since the 16th century. The most intense eruption in 1877 produced scorching lava flows reaching as far as 100 km from the volcano. The last eruption was in 1904, though alarming signs were observed in 2005. Given Cotopaxi’s proximity to densely populated areas, an eruption would be catastrophic.
