It’s been almost 10 years since Sustainable Development Goals – or SDGs – were developed. The 17 goals, created by the United Nations in 2012 and adopted by all UN member states in 2015, were designed as a ‘call to action to end poverty and inequality, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy health, justice and prosperity’. But almost a decade on, just 15 per cent of the goals are set to be achieved by 2030. The UN Global Compact says the push for corporates to reach sustainability goals has been derailed by the COVID crisis, rising cost of capital and geopolitical instability.
Assistant-Secretary General and CEO of United Nations Global Compact, Sanda Ojiambo and executive director for the network in Australia, Kate Dundas say it’ll take a concerted effort from governments and the private sector as well as financing to get back on track. Kate Dundas says in Australia, changes and updates to the Corporations Act that come into effect in January 2025 requiring companies to report on their climate impacts will push some businesses to race to catch up but that’s only one part of the journey. She says clear policy settings that provide certainty for business is another important part of the solution.
