Can Nigeria become a cow superpower? Back in July, President Bola Tinubu announced a new livestock development ministry. Now his government is planning to reposition cattle rearing as a critical sector. He’s been holding consultations with industry stakeholders and traditional rulers at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Nigeria is home to over 20 million cows, mostly owned by Fulani herders. It has the fourth largest cattle population in Africa and rearing livestock provides a livelihood for a third of Nigerias population. Nigeria’s dairy market is valued at one and a half billion dollars.
But despite its size, almost 90 percent of local demand is met through imports.
So where does this all leave Nigeria’s cattle herders? As it turns out, some of them are not too far from State House, where that high level meeting took place. But urban development, climate change and violence in rural areas are making it increasingly difficult for them to find enough grazing land. DW’s Fanny Facsar reports from the Nigerian capital.

That’s because most of the cows are working in government
Insulting headline and title. You people are wicked!
Russki wagner will help em 😂😂❤❤❤❤
Cow superpower word to humiliation for Nigeria. Shame on west
Continue breed and rear only the indigenous species.
This is embarrassing
Anyway, there are countries with way more cows and smaller landmass; yet living peacefully with the non cate rearers. Nigeria with with far fewer number if cows are causing untold destruction to farmlands across the nation and destroying communities writh impunity over refusal to allow their crops be used as feeding geounds for cows.
Therefore, let Nigeria remain as it is with her few cows because increasing the livestock's will escalate her internal conflicts exponentially.
This is pure stupidity.
The government needs to remove it's hands on everything
What nonsense is this? Is it not the Fulani people who are doing the killing and kidnapping? Who will plan to kidnap a Fulani man? There is no reason for these Fulani herders to carry their cows to the city. With the long rainy season this year there are more than enough grazing areas. This smells like manipulation. I think they want to give money to the Fulani since buhari don comot to appease them.
The LAST Censor was in 1991… they are clueless
Can't wait to see milk in US labeled "Product of Nigeria".
20 million cows against 2000 million people who eat meat like nonsense!
A cow superpower 😂
Dr Chaka please your statement are sentimental not facts base
Livestock isn't about cows alone.
20 million cows cannot meet the needs of over 200million people.
This is a lie because there’s No data anywhere in Nigeria to support this claim because Nigeria doesn’t even know the number of people in the country, No birth certificates nor death certificates, No data of anything in the country, This is a lie they use during election to steal votes by counting animals as humans. There’s nothing that is normal in Nigeria, everything is wrong with this government and the country.
Policies failing the guy on the farm…again. raising cows in town😢.
No they can't…my Nigerian brothers, the guy is into oil. As a South African brother, i can tell you this….nigeria is reach, the country is reach, united you can make it. Fighting amongst yourselves won't solve the situation.
Since the the 1970’s the government has tried and failed to entice Fulani herders into ranching even with free land. Fulani nomadic culture is the biggest problem. They resist the idea of ranching, they say it’s against their way of life. This herders trespass and trample on farmlands which gives rise to conflict. This reportage is not a accurate reflection of what’s happening.
Some of them are in parliament 😂😂😂
These cows taste way way batter than any cows in Europe. She working for EU acting like she’s batter. The land available for them to be free ranch
These cows taste way way batter than any cows in Europe. She working for EU acting like she’s batter. The land available for them to be free ranch
She’s well trained by European people
Are they fit to eat
I'll love to see how the Nigerian government gets past Miyetti Allah.
Nigeria seems to have a law and order situation.
From bandits running riot in rural areas to cow herders and their flock roaming the urban city scape.
