Global energy market disruption is desperately needed if the world is to stand any chance of achieving its decarbonisation goals. Taking on the incumbent behemoth monopolistic suppliers is no mean feat, but Greg Jackson is confronting the issue head one with a raft of initiatives that will not only revolutionise the UK energy sector but bring change to markets all over the world. I visited him at his London HQ to have a chat about what he’s up to.

Octopus promised to install a heat pump in our house and backed down last minute, having taken us for a ride and made us pay for preparations. Eff those effers.
Pity he can'l control the weather. Currently we have had no clear skies for a week and none is forecast. There is a wind of 4mph. I have wood and candles.
Around 1990 I met a man (working for ABB) who programmed a tool that would allow to connect, disconnect and obtain electric power in the german power grid on demand, without human interference. He wrote it on a RISC processor they didn't even have a manual for, because it was fairly new. I suppose Octopus is using the same principle, but on a lot of steroids, so props to Mr Jackson.
Amazing, Pay-as-you-Go electricity
As I type this, electricity demand is 36GW, and wind and solar are contributing around 1% of the UK's electricity. Gas is 59%. No amount of fancy consumer analytics will make renewables fit customer demand. This isn't market disruption. It's clearing the way for demand management by surge pricing. The customer will be treated as the problem.
Imagine wanting to use your EV, and finding that Octopus has drained your car battery to stablise the grid!!!???
And yet EVs are a superior driving experience??!!
What are their plans for Africa? I'd be very interested in having a meeting with them. I run Dyson Energy in Ghana (West Africa) and we need leap frog technology in the Energy sector and I think this might just be it.
You’re awesome Dave and all the work you do. But please don’t wear the Orange sweater😅
Your spreading it thick mate.
He tells a story of telling his friends that he was getting into energy they told him that he was mad how wrong they were.
It is also a major privacy single point of failure.
This is all very good stuff and I wish I could join-in and take part in this 'revolution' . Trouble is, none of this technology is available unless one has a smart meter. For the past 5 years I have found it impossible to get a working smart meter fitted! Most people I know are experiencing the same problem. I wrote to Greg directly in 2019 and received a personal reply in which he admitted that the metering industry is broken. It seems the industry is still broken in 2024.
Thank God we have such diverse individuals in the UK building innovative world changing technology. Diversity is our strength…
Could this bloke run the NHS?
Bringing down electricity prices is the way to go.
sounds like more deep state control!
as long as it doesn't turn into a data-kracken nor tries to become a monopoly .. cool idea
"you probably do not know about Octopus if you are not from UK"
Yeah sure, with so many energy transition youtube channels from UK, it is impossible to avoid knowing about it
53p per kwh? ouch …
Amazing, I'm ditching my current provider and moving to Octopus ASAP! This man deserves an accolade of some sort!
