So this has happened more than once many years ago going all the way back to the 50s yet they say it’s due to climate change / global warming? Sounds like a freak weather event to me!
Leave out the fact that these cities are built over natural aquifers and water tables… This region has been dealing with flood for decades.
Condolences to all those effected, such heartbreaking incidents are difficult to fathom anytime, but in in 2024, its crazy.
Perhaps the constructive issue is to consider why the infrastructure was unable to cope with a " 1 in 70 year" deluge.
The business case to construct all current and future flood engineering required to prevent it, would in a series of $bn dollar projects requiring government funding. Its a question that will just get more urgent to answer as every year of inadequate action that passes, it compounds the inaction to a damaging future.
Whichever political party is in power the question remains do they raise taxes for a 1-70year event, or do they focus on construction of more housing, schools, factories, hospitals!
The decision is ultimately with the electorate and them voting for the party who has the best policies for them. Such proposals will be framed by the decisions taken based on the forecast effects of climate change. Thus, the upcoming COP 29 (UN Climate Change Conference Baku) should prove helpful to see if anyone is listening.
