Today’s guest is Andrew ‘Twiggy’ Forrest, the chairman of Fortescue Metals Group.
Twiggy took over the company that would become Fortescue in 2003 and developed it into one of the world’s four major iron ore miners in a little over a decade (and became Australia’s second wealthiest person in the process). Today, Twiggy also invests privately through Tattarang and is one of Australia’s leading philanthropists through Minderoo Foundation and is a leading voice on ending the use of fossil fuels and creating green energy solutions.
In today’s episode we discuss:
– Where the nickname Twiggy comes from
– How he is spending his time today
– What are his biggest problems with ‘net zero’
– Why Fortescue has committed to ‘real zero’ instead
– Whether a complete phase out of fossil fuels is truly possible
– Advice for young Australians starting their careers

You still need coal to make steel for the carbon content. Hence carbon steel. There's no way around it
Twiggy what a great bloke!
Lmfao, the shilliest shill you could ever have had on. Love it that the facade of shallow, surface-level larrikinism is enough for some. "Twiggy" the big "twigsteroo" ay? Ay?!
Mate, this guy made a fortune mining, then pivoted perfectly into the pig-trough of "environmentalism" because he knows suckers when he sees them and he saw which way the wind was blowing – no pun intended on the least reliable energy source.
This is a very superficial level of explanation in regards to fossil fuels vs renewables. For example hydrogen is generated from heat steam methane reforming from natural gas. Water electrolysis uses a lot more energy to create it than you get out. So by making hydrogen you are in fact still dependant on fossil fuels. The other conveniently left out topic everyone ignores is the raw material required for batteries is in fact finite and not renewable with a lifespan of 3-5 years. We have 12% of the world gas supply and sell most of it overseas, except in wa where we had the foresight of the dom gas agreement when the gas act was developed. I like the enthusiasm but that attitude that he will get rid of anyone who’s not a yes man to his agenda is a big problem in twiggy’s companies like Fortescue and anaconda before that (which was built on a poverty package and cut every corner in the book…)
If Twiggy really wanted to “save the world” he would engage in a public debate with the sensible climate science experts, not well intentioned amateurs (sorry guys).
Guys, stick to stocks and investing. Woke political positioning will lose you watchers.
You first, twig
And this joker will NEVER go without coal. Doesnt live by what he preaches.
Congratulations on having Twiggy as a guest!
A fantastic level of insight and an incredibly interesting view on the future of the industrial sector.
Massive fan of the channel since watching your episode with Matt Barrie, keep it up gents!
What he didnt explain was the crazy cost involved, which means Governmental subsidies. It is not a black and white answer
Really good episode – great to see where the economy could move towards, the irony of it being led by mining isn't something I expected though.
The ability to make iron and steel without coal is game changing, would love to see Australia be a leader in the space, esp if we can improve our battery and renewable industry!
