On October 29th, the VinFuture Foundation, in partnership with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), convened the October InnovaTalk, focusing on the critical issue of “Water and Food Security.” As the global population surges and climate change intensifies, the availability of water, a cornerstone of agricultural production and food security, is increasingly threatened. Given its imperativeness, his InnovaTalk brought together world renowned experts to explore innovative solutions and foster global cooperation in securing sustainable food production and preserving vital water resources, attracting over 170 participants from 21 countries.
The webinar was chaired by Professor Ermias Kebreab, Associate Dean for Global Engagement at the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and Director of the World Food Center at the University of California, Davis (USA). He highlighted the webinar’s significance in raising awareness and fostering innovation in sustainable water management. Joining him were two distinguished experts from IRRI: Dr. Cao Duc Phat and Dr. Anton Urfels.
Dr. Cao Duc Phat, a renowned expert in agriculture and sustainable development and Former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam, currently serves as IRRI’s Chair of the Board of Trustees. In his presentation, he delved into the six-decade partnership between Vietnam and IRRI and their collaborative efforts to establish a sustainable rice system, particularly in the context of Vietnam’s water-intensive rice agriculture. Additionally, Dr. Anton Urfels, a Senior Scientist in Water Management at IRRI, provided a comprehensive overview of the global water and food security landscape, highlighting the growing risks of water and food insecurity worldwide.
