As far as I understand. In 1965 the UK bought the Chagos Islands from Mauritius for £3,000,000 (three million pounds) via the Lancaster House agreement. Mauritius itself became fully independent from the UK in 1968 (without the Chagos Islands), but in the 1980's the Mauritian government claimed that it had been forced to sell the Chagos islands under duress and claimed that the transfer was illegal under international law (no doubt after they'd spent the three million quid) and began campaigning through the UN to have the Chagos Islands returned. So now the Chagos are no doubt going to be returned to Mauritius will the UK have the present day value of the Chagos Islands refunded to the treasury by Mauritius? not a chance, because not one UK politician has the backbone to speak out and defend the interests of the UK.
