Closing session of the 10th G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit (P20)

PRESENTATION:
The 10th P20 Summit, under the motto “Parliaments for a Just World and a Sustainable Planet”, gathers leaders to discuss challenges and solutions concerning the fight against hunger, poverty and inequality; sustainable development; and the construction of a global governance adapted to the 21st century. There will also be debates on the results and recommendations from the 1st P20 Meeting of Women Parliamentarians.

The 10th session of the P20 Summit, held under the motto “Parliaments for a Just World and a Sustainable Planet”, is structured around three priority issues:
● The contribution of parliaments to the fight against hunger, poverty and inequality;
● The role of parliaments in promoting sustainable development;
● Parliaments in the construction of global governance adapted to the challenges of the 21st century.

The participants include the Parliaments from the G20 members, including the Pan-African Parliament and the European Parliament, plus Parliaments from guest countries, regional Parliaments and international organizations.
The meeting’s languages are Portuguese, English, Spanish and French. Plenary sessions will take place at the Ulysses Guimarães Plenary, of the Chamber of Deputies.

P20 Women Parliamentarians:
Brazil’s P20 Presidency organized the 1st P20 Meeting of Women Parliamentarians on 1 and 2 July 2024, in the city of Maceió, to mobilize women’s participation in debates on topics that are at the core of world’s attention. Women parliamentarians from G20 and guest countries have led discussions on priority issues at G20’s agendas in 2024: climate change and sustainable development; social inclusion and the fight against hunger and poverty; and the reform of world institutions. The agenda included working session on:
-the role of women in climate justice and environmental sustainability
-initiatives to increase women participation in politics
– initiatives to strengthen democracy
– gender equality
– economic autonomy for women
– overcoming racism
In addition to the joint working sessions, the parliamentarians had the opportunity to engage in bilateral meetings, where they could exchange experiences and information of mutual interest.

At the closing session, the meeting adopted the Charter of Alagoas, which contains 8 recommendations to increase women’s participation in decision-making spaces in politics, economy and society.
