Apple molasses caused a tsunami.
Going back 100 years, in 1919, a wave that engulfed everything in the North End of Boston caused a major tragedy. But if you think it was caused by a natural disaster, you are wrong. Surprisingly, this tragic event was a sugary disaster that would later be called the Apple Molasses Tsunami. The culprit was molasses, a sticky brown syrup used in baking, with sugar! By January 1919, the shipment arrived at the production site in its usual bulk. As the workers heated the molasses as part of their daily routine, the molasses expanded much more than normal in the container due to the temperature changes. The liquid molasses spiraled out of control and turned into a tsunami 15 feet high. In addition to the destruction of surrounding buildings, there were at least 21 deaths. It took several weeks for the streets of Boston to be free of the sticky substance.
