Held on Thursday 13th February 2025, the RDR Monthly Event focused on financing strategies for climate change and disaster resilience in the Asia Pacific. Thank you to our speaker, Dr Saut Sagala, Associate Professor and Senior Fellow Researcher at Resilience Development Initiative (RDI). The webinar was chaired by Dr Rozana Himaz, Associate Professor in Humanitarian Economics at UCL Department of Risk and Disaster Reduction.
Developing countries in the Asia-Pacific are highly vulnerable to climate change-induced disasters like floods, cyclones and sea-level rise, with significant economic losses—estimated at US$57 billion in 2022—and wider non-economic damages. Lower-income nations in Southeast Asia, South Asia and small island developing states are particularly affected, facing strains on fiscal health and diverging resources from development needs to debt repayments. This webinar explored strategies for disaster risk financing, including risk retention, pooling and transfer schemes.
The webinar was chaired by Dr Rozana Himaz, Associate Professor in Humanitarian Economics at UCL Department of Risk and Disaster Reduction.
