A rare deep-sea fish, called the ‘Oarfish,’ has been spotted on beaches in Spain and Mexico, sparking fear and curiosity worldwide. Known for its long, ribbon-like body and bright orange fins, the oarfish usually lives deep in the ocean, around 650 feet below the surface. Its appearance on beaches is rare, and many believe it could be a sign of an upcoming natural disaster.
Why is it Called the ‘Doomsday Fish’?
In Japanese folklore, the oarfish is known as the “Messenger of the Sea God.” People believe that when this fish comes to the surface, it warns of major earthquakes or tsunamis. This belief gained attention in 2011 when over 20 oarfish were found on Japan’s beaches before a devastating earthquake and tsunami struck.
Recently, an oarfish was seen on Playa El Quemado beach in Mexico, just days after a magnitude 7.6 earthquake hit the Caribbean Sea near Mexico. This area is part of the “Ring of Fire,” a region prone to earthquakes, adding to people’s fears.
Strange Incident in Kerala
In Kerala, a viral video showed thousands of fish suddenly jumping out of the water and coming to the shore. While the exact location is unclear, many are linking it to the oarfish sightings, spreading rumours of something dangerous happening under the ocean.
What Do Scientists Say?
Rachel Grant, a biology expert, explained that before an earthquake, pressure in the ground can create an electric charge, making water poisonous and forcing fish to the surface. Another theory suggests that carbon monoxide gas from the ocean floor might push deep-sea fish like the oarfish to shallow waters.
However, scientists like Hiroyuki Motomura, a fish expert, say there is no scientific proof linking oarfish to earthquakes. They believe climate change or ocean pollution could be forcing these fish to the surface.
Conclusion
While the oarfish sightings have sparked fear, scientists urge people not to panic. The exact reason for their appearance remains a mystery. Do you think this fish is a warning of a natural disaster? Let us know in the comments.
