Dr. Indra Hang Subba Raises Himalayan Water Crisis and Glacial Flood Risks in Lok Sabha
New Delhi, March 2025: Lok Sabha MP Dr. Indra Hang Subba participated in the discussion on the Demands for Grants of the Ministry of Jal Shakti for 2025-26, highlighting critical water and environmental concerns in the Himalayan region, particularly in Sikkim.
During his speech, Dr. Subba raised the alarming issue of drying spring water sources in the Himalayas and urged the Ministry to allocate funds for extensive Springshed Development under the Dhara Vikas Yojana. He emphasized the pressing need for sustainable water conservation efforts to address the region’s water scarcity.
Dr. Subba also praised the successful management of Plastic Waste Management Units in Yuksam and Padamchen, suggesting that their operational model could be replicated across the country to enhance waste management practices.
Furthermore, he highlighted the threat posed by Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), stressing that flood management strategies must include research and mitigation measures for glacial lakes. “I urge the Ministry to allocate sufficient funds for research and mitigation of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods,” he stated, underlining the urgency of proactive disaster risk management in the face of climate change.
