In March 2025, South Korea faced its worst wildfire disaster on record. The fires, exacerbated by ultra-dry conditions and strong winds, originated in Uiseong County and rapidly spread across North Gyeongsang Province. These wildfires resulted in at least 28 deaths, displaced over 37,000 people, and destroyed thousands of structures, including historic temples and cultural heritage sites. The blazes scorched approximately 48,000 hectares of land. Authorities have attributed the severity of these fires to climate change, which has increased the frequency and intensity of such natural disasters.
