From devastating droughts in Kenya to rising seas swallowing communities in the Pacific, vulnerable communities are bearing the brunt of climate changeโs wrath. Yet, the glaring injustice remains: those who have contributed the least to the crisis are paying the highest price.
The Climate Dues campaign is a rallying cry for climate justice, demanding that wealthy, high-emitting countries #PayUp4LossAndDamage not as charity, but as a long-overdue obligation to communities on the frontlines of the climate crisis.
What is Climate Dues?
Climate Dues is built on a simple yet revolutionary premise: Loss and Damage financing is not a handout โ it is reparations owed to communities suffering the irreversible impacts of climate change. Whether it’s drought-stricken pastoralists in Kenya or entire islands disappearing under rising seas, climate change is robbing vulnerable populations of their homes, livelihoods, and futures.
The science is clear the Global South contributes less than 10% of global emissions, yet faces 90% of the losses and damages from climate-related disasters. This isn’t just a climate crisis it is a crisis of injustice and inequality.
Why Loss and Damage Matters
Under Article 8 of the Paris Agreement, the global community recognized the importance of addressing Loss and Damage the irreversible harm caused by climate change, including loss of life, livelihoods, cultural heritage, and biodiversity. However, despite years of negotiations, progress remains painfully slow. The funds promised to vulnerable countries are either too little, too late โ or never delivered at all.
This delay costs lives. It costs futures. And it leaves frontline communities locked in cycles of poverty, displacement, and despair.
Loss and Damage is a Feminist Issue
Climate injustice is deeply gendered. Women and girls in pastoralist communities walk further for water, miss school during droughts, and shoulder the burden of unpaid care work in times of crisis. Yet, their resilience remains invisible their voices silenced in decision-making rooms where their futures are decided.
Climate Dues is not just about money it’s about dignity, justice, and amplifying the voices of women on the frontlines of the climate crisis.
