Israel Declares National Emergency Amid Raging Wildfires Near Jerusalem
Israel is facing one of the most severe environmental crises in its recent history as massive wildfires sweep through areas near Jerusalem. The government has declared a national emergency after flames, fueled by high temperatures, dry conditions, and strong winds, consumed over 6,000 acres of land.
Thousands of residents have been evacuated from high-risk zones, and key roads, including the highway between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, have been temporarily closed. The fires have also forced the cancellation of Independence Day celebrations and other public events.
More than 160 firefighting teams, supported by aircraft and military personnel, are battling the blaze on multiple fronts. At least 23 people, including 17 firefighters, have been injured. In a shocking development, authorities have arrested 18 individuals on suspicion of arson.
President Isaac Herzog has called for unity and action, linking the scale of the disaster to the growing threat of climate change. As the situation remains critical, Israel has requested international assistance, with help expected from several countries.
