Ah nonsense, there is not sonething lije climate change. I am a scientist and just want to tell you to go and search how nature was 100years ago, 50 years ago and similar things happened. Peopke go and build on places in dry seasons and dont know the aeres history😢
The same with peopke building houses on riverbanks, there were floidlines in the past but authorities dont look at these kund of laws anymore.
God is getting very angry with the deeds of mankind with all the wars and huge financial debts going on worldwide in recent times. Therefore, God unleashed the full scale effects of his wrath through good 'O' Mother Nature. Indeed far worse off than an avalanche. Avalanches only happen with heavy snow-blocks breaking apart and crashing down the mountain slopes, but glacier destruction is totally rooted into the soil, rock depths, and collapsing down a mountain slope is tantamount to the forces equivalent to that of a mini-volcanic eruption. Certainly proving global warming on an unprecedented scale. Never before!
it is May. temperatures in 3000 meters these days were around 0. That melting of permafrost caused by climate change sure wasnt the reason.

I find it funny seeing so many non-geologist comments insisting that it is not climate change, while all of the geologist putting out content say that climate change is playing a part. Climate has an enormous effect on geological cycles, since it affects how landscapes erode. Humans have been affecting our landscapes for millennia via deforestation that has allowed incredible erosion to occur. Geologist warned about the effects of farming practices in the central US years before the American dustbowl that meant the loss of many cubic miles/kilometers of topsoil from the Great Plains.

According to Swiss news tagblatt, this is one of the few glaciers that grew in size. And that can lead to this. Very unlikely climate change on a glacier in May… 🙄. Thats ludicrous.

1.) It is May. Temperatures on a glacier which is usually around 3000 meters these days is around 0. So the ice just starts melting. if it were too high temperatures this wouldve happened last year in summer or fall.
2.) according to Swiss tagblatt this is one of the few glaciers that grew. So it wasnt getting smaller as a whole due to warmer temperatures, but grew
3.) growing of a glacier means more snow, more ice, more weigth. And this just might be the reason. It was too snowy or too cold or both.
What was once called global warming is now referred to as climate change. The climate does change over time, it always has. Even before soccer moms drove their SUV's.

And yeah… This is just the beginning of what will eventually happen downstream to the river system and valley. All you need to do is look at every drainage channel along that mountain range and it shows you that this has happened MANY times in the past and will continue to happen.
They need to evacuate below the dam and drain that body of water because this will be making it's way to the Rhone.

YES! This has been happening for millions of years. But this doesn’t mean climate change has nothing to do with it. Climate change is also not new. In fact glaciers have always collapsed like this during periods when our climate has become warmer, the way it is today. The issue isn’t whether climate change is at fault. The real question is why is our climate changing faster today than it has ever changed before, making disasters like this more frequent and more devastating. And because we know why our climate is changing faster than it ever has, what can we all do to slow this change?
